10/10/2018 - RED ROCKS AMPHITHEATRE
Three times is the charm! After seeing ‚The National‘ last October in Los Angeles and in February this year in beautiful Auckland/New Zealand, it worked out to see them a third time live. This time in a very special venue: at Red Rocks Amphitheatre just outside Denver/Colorado. This is one of the must go-concert locations on this planet: a natural amphitheatre formed of red and orange glooming rocks, a magical place with spectacular acoustics.
The first time I came across that location was some time in the 90s (yes, that long ago!) when I have seen the concert movie ‚Under a blood red sky‘ (1983) from U2 the very first time. Every since I wanted to see a concert there and eventually it worked out.
But the weather was not on my side: the temperature was as low as 0 degrees Celsius/32F, the clouds hovered pretty low among the red rock facades and after the fabulous Sharon Van Etten, who opened the night, an annoying drizzle started to make it even more uncomfortable. But I was prepared and wore 5 layers of clothes. However, a lot of dancing and keep on moving my toes didn’t really help: I was horribly cold and three songs before the gig was over I had to get going and leave the venue. All in all, despite the cruel November weather, it was an awesome gig, the band was in high spirits and the audience did it’s best to forget about the circumstances. A spectacular place for magical concerts.
